Seven powerful tribes were the core groups that formed the Magyar people from whom emerged the Hungarian nation. They established a federation, codified a national constitution, and elected Arpad, leader of the largest tribe, as hereditary ruler of land to be obtained by common effort and shared by all. Here, in 895 C.E., he leads them across the Carpathian mountains into their new homeland, where the nation was formed in 896.
